Title: ABC International Excellence Award and proposed joint WIPO/UNICEF/IPA event at London Book Fair, March 14 to 16,2017
Description: ABC International Excellence Award for Accessible Publishing:
As was done in 2015 and 2016, we seek your agreement to present the ABC International Excellence Award for Accessible Publishing at the London Book Fair awards ceremony, to be held on March 14, 2017 at 6 pm. You have requested that I present the award, given that you will need to attend a conference in Argentina during the same time period.
The ABC International Excellence Award recognizes outstanding leadership or achievement in advancing the accessibility of books and other digital publications to persons with print disabilities. The award recognizes two categories: one for publishers and one for project
initiatives and it is important for ABC's visibi lity within the publishing community, as well as to promote the concept of accessible publishing.
I chaired the teleconference with the selection jury last Friday, January 26, and we assessed the nominations. The selection jury, comprised of various organizations and individuals working in the field of accessibility at an international level, decided to short-list the following nominees. The finalists were announced on the ABC website on Wednesday, February 8:
The publisher category:
• Picsterbooks, South Africa
• SAGE Publishing, UK
• VitaiSource Technologies, U.S.
The initiative category:
• JISC, U.K.
• Tata Consultancy Services, India
• Tiflonexos- Argentina
SAGE is the winner in the publisher category, and Tiflonexos is the winner in the initiative category. The names of the award winners are embargoed until after the LBF awards ceremony in London on March 14.
SAGE Publishing is a leading independent UK publisher of academic and professional content. SAGE estimates that 100% of its books have an accessible PDF and, since 2015, that all of its materials are produced in an accessible Epub3 standard.
