Subject/Type: | Piracy |
Focus: | Film |
Country/Territory: | United Kingdom, United States of America |
Objective: | To quantify the scale, and identify and explore all aspects of consumers' home copying and downloading behaviour. |
Sample: | 1.003 US consumers, and 578 UK consumers |
Methodology: | Online survey |
Main Findings
In 2007, just over one quarter of American and British consumers reported making copies of pre-recorded DVDs. In the 6 months preceding the survey, on average DVD copiers had copied 14 titles in the US, and 9 in the UK.
Copiers of DVDs used both analogue and digital copying methods, with the two being of almost equal importance. The type of titles most often copied was movies, followed by TV programmes and special interest content.
The top 2 reasons cited for making a DVD copy are for self use or convenience; one in four copiers copied DVDs so as to share them with friends and family. Other reasons given include “the cost of DVD titles is too high”, “titles not yet available to purchase”, “inability to find DVD titles in store”.
