Details
Subject/Type: | Piracy |
Focus: | Film |
Country/Territory: | United Kingdom, United States of America |
Objective: | To get an idea of the revenue loss resulting from home copying of DVDs, and to understand the impact of deterring consumers from copying. |
Sample: | 3.613 US consumers, and 1.718 UK consumers |
Methodology: | Online survey |
Main Findings
In 2008, around one third of American and British consumers reported making copies of pre-recorded DVDs, compared to just over a quarter in 2007. In the 6 months preceding the survey, DVD copiers had copied about a dozen titles (12 in the US, and 13 in the UK). New release titles were copied more often than catalogue/library titles.
Copiers of DVDs used both analogue and digital copying methods, with the two being of almost equal importance. The rate of successful copying of blockbuster movie titles was higher in the US than in Britain (57% versus 34%).
If unable to make copies of DVDs, 63% of respondents in the UK and 77% in the US would have purchased all, some, or at least a few of the titles copied. The preferred option for buying them would be at sale or promotional price.
