Patent Law Helpdesk for WIPO Member States

If you are a government official or a representative of a regional IP organization, ask your patent law-related questions here and discuss the matter directly with WIPO staff in a virtual meeting.

Patent law is a complex area. National legislation must not only meet international and regional commitments of the country, but also be aligned with national needs and priorities, in order to fit the local innovation ecosystem. While WIPO offers its Member States tailor-made legislative assistance, some simpler questions can be addressed outside the formal framework of technical support. This is what WIPO Patent Law Helpdesk is for.

Who is Patent Law Helpdesk for?

The Patent Law Helpdesk is available to government officials and representatives of regional IP organizations, and in particular those engaging directly or indirectly with patent-related matters.

If you are outside this group, such as a private user having a patent law-related question, please feel free to contact us at the following email: patents.mail@wipo.int.

When should you use Patent Law Helpdesk?

We encourage you to contact us directly with questions suitable for a single live consultation on patent-related matters in law or policy. Here are some examples of questions you could ask:

  • finding information on the patent grant procedure, patentable subject matter, the rights conferred by a patent or exhaustion of patent rights;
  • researching various approaches for defining a key term in patent law.

In case more in-depth support is needed to answer your query, we will redirect you to the appropriate WIPO service, or encourage you to submit an official request for legislative assistance.

How does Patent Law Helpdesk work?
