IP and Gastronomic Tourism: Cameroon

A project linking tourism with local gastronomy takes on its full meaning in Cameroon, a country named after the Portuguese word for “shrimp” (“camarão”).

The project seeks to promote the use of intellectual property (IP) in relation to culinary traditions of Cameroon, conscious of the relevance of gastronomy as a way to boost tourism.

Outputs

Scoping study (October 2021)

The scoping study focuses on 20 typical dishes, which enjoy domestic and international renown and can therefore contribute to the development of tourism.

Roundtable (December 2021)

A roundtable took place on December 7, 2021. The roundtable was attended by approximately 100 participants.

Ten culinary traditions were selected by the participants on the basis of the scoping study, namely Ndolè, Mbokko bè Ngniiri, Kilichi, Ndomba de chair, Mbongo’o Tchobi, Bitoso Ri Kipen Ki Bazi, Nnam Ngön, Kondrè, Ekoki, Eru. Four additional culinary traditions – namely Achu, Sanga, Neé Gouo Iié and Okok – were selected as reserve.

IP analysis (June 2022)

The IP analysis describes the selected culinary traditions and provides their recipes. For some culinary traditions, tourist attractions and related activities are developed in the analysis. The analysis contains a data sheet per culinary tradition.

National Seminar June 2022

The international workshop took place on October 18, 2022, at WIPO Headquarters, bringing together the four participating countries and experts, who shared their experience in the project deployment and discussed their conclusions and ideas for future action. As part of the project’s concluding activities, a side event took place on the margins of the CDIP 29th session, in which presented the project’s takeaways to Member States.

The four countries agreed on the importance of continuing work, building on the project’s results, to impact real people in the gastronomic and tourism sectors. The World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) also attended the workshop to explore with the countries ways to pursue the tourism component of the project.

The national seminar organized by WIPO and the Ministry of Leisure and Tourism of Cameroon (MINTOUL) took place on June 24, 2022. There were approximately 150 participants.

The seminar started with an official opening ceremony during which His Excellency, the Minister of State, MINTOUL, welcomed the participants and underlined Cameroon's objective to become "a popular gastronomic tourist destination”.
