WIPO Director General Meets Estonian President, Ministers and other Officials During Visit

WIPO Director General Francis Gurry discussed bilateral relations and the role of innovation in the global economy during meetings held with Estonian President Kersti Kaljulaid and other senior government officials during a visit to the country.

Mr. Gurry also participated in the Celebration of the 100th year Anniversary of the Estonian Patent Office and gave the welcoming address and opening remarks during the Conference on “Artificial Intelligence and Smart Economy”.

During the Conference, the Director General spoke about the trends in artificial intelligence (AI) and WIPO’s work in the area.

Mr. Gurry and President Kaljulaid discussed the future of bilateral cooperation between WIPO and the Government of Estonia, the role of the Government in promoting intellectual property (IP) rights in Estonia and the region and the importance of new technologies and artificial intelligence.

President Kaljulaid emphasized the high interest of her country in this subject and expressed her thanks and appreciation for WIPO’s cooperation.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs Urmas Reinsalu thanked WIPO for all the support provided for the development and empowerment of intellectual property and knowledge transfer.  The minister emphasized readiness for the future expansion of the cooperation with WIPO.

During a bilateral meeting with Mr. Raivo Aeg, Minister of Justice, discussion focused on the important role IP and new technologies for the Estonian society and future and on further development of the cooperation with WIPO.

Mr. Gurry visited Estonia on May 22 and 23, 2019.
