Bureau for Latin America and the Caribbean - Modernization of the Intellectual Property System

One of the more important objectives undertaken by the Bureau is the contribution to capacity and institution building (training of staff, government officials, provision of equipment, etc.). It is the starting point of the creation of most IP related activities in a country. The goal is to establish sustainable national intellectual property systems and/or to strengthen those already existing through the effective integration of intellectual property rights administration, promotion, protection, and enforcement mechanisms. The Bureau endeavors to take into account identified national interests in the context of the emerging global economy. One of the best approaches in meeting this objective is through the implementation of structured Nationally-Focused Action Plans (NFAPs), as well as other technical cooperation projects, which tries to take a holistic view of what is needed by the specific country.
